Tech Neck: The Modern Epidemic

Look around a train, a cafe, or a waiting room and you’ll see the same posture everywhere: heads tipped forward, chins down, eyes on a screen. We spend hours a day like this, and our necks are feeling it. It even has a name now, tech neck.

What tech neck is

Your head is heavy, around five kilograms. When it sits balanced over your shoulders, your neck carries that weight easily. Tip it forward to look down at a phone, and the load on your neck climbs sharply. Do that for hours a day, and the strain adds up.

What it does over time

Held long enough, that forward-head position asks your body to adapt to it. The muscles at the front of your neck shorten, the ones at the back work overtime, and the joints in your neck lose some of their easy range. It often shows up as a stiff neck, tension headaches, or aching shoulders. We wrote more about screen-related strain in our post on posture in a digital world.

What may help

Small changes make a difference. Lift your phone toward eye level instead of dropping your head. Set your laptop on a stand. Take regular breaks to look up and roll your shoulders back. Alongside those habits, chiropractic care focuses on how your neck and upper back are moving.
