Spring has a way of pulling everyone back outside. The garden needs attention, the runners come out of the cupboard, and weekend plans fill up again. After a quieter winter, that sudden jump in activity can catch your body off guard.
Easing back into activity
Winter tends to mean less movement, so your body settles into a lower gear. When spring arrives and you ramp up quickly, muscles and joints that haven’t worked hard in months are asked to do a lot at once. That mismatch is where a lot of early-season niggles come from.
Common spring niggles
The complaints we tend to see as the weather warms up:
- Lower back soreness after the first big gardening session.
- Tight, aching legs from returning to running or walking.
- Shoulder and neck strain from spring cleaning and reaching overhead.
Preparing your body
A little preparation goes a long way. Build activity back up gradually rather than all at once, warm up before you start, and keep moving in the days between. If something old flares up as you get going, it’s worth getting it looked at before it settles in.
